Continuing a Legacy of Innovation at NRG Stadium
The home of the Houston Texans installs Musco's LED lighting solution

NRG Stadium is home to the Houston Texans and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ and has been a beacon of innovation for stadiums across the United States. It was the first professional American football stadium with a retractable roof. It will be the first professional stadium in Texas to install solar panels to power the stadium. And, it's now one of the first professional football stadiums in the United States to feature new lighting solution using an LED light source.

Without question, NRG is on the leading edge of professional sports stadiums when it comes to sustainable practices. The 700 solar panels, along with six electrical vehicle-charging stations, are other aspects of the venue's sustainability master plan. The new energy efficient LED lighting system was one of the major components of this comprehensive plan.

To make the plan a reality, the leaders at NRG turned to a partner they could trust. Musco installed
the stadium's original lights when it was built in 2002, and is the world's leading innovator in sports
lighting solutions.

The floodlighting involved the installation of 480 optically enhanced, high efficiency LED luminaires, which ultimately produce a much brighter, more uniformly distributed light throughout the stadium. In addition to an enhanced playing and fan experience, the system offers instant on/off/dimming capabilities and the ability for special effects during Texans' games or at any of the other major sporting and non-sporting events held at NRG Stadium throughout the year. The lighting system will help the stadium realise a significant savings in operating costs, with the virtual elimination of maintenance and increased energy conservation. And the lights will function at a much higher level of efficiency, with a total energy savings of 60%.

“We have provided complete lighting solutions for thousands of municipal and school entities along with some of the world's most prestigious sports facilities, collaborating with our customers to design a system for their individual needs. Our partnership with NRG Energy and NRG Stadium has resulted in a historical display of sustainable technology, and we're honored to have been part of this project.”
