Musco shines at Athens Olympics
|

2004 Summer Olympics Games, Athens, Greece
|
|
Musco lighted the biggest temporary lighting project in company history after being named a
lighting provider for the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. The project was approximately
twice the size and scope of what Musco did in Sydney, Australia in 2000.
Musco provided lighting for the field of play on 18 venues and supervised the installation of specialized
lighting on approximately 20 additional venues including the Olympic Gymnastics Gala. More than
1,000 hours of engineering went into defining lighting systems for sports ranging from swimming to baseball to
beach volleyball.
Manufacturing was done in the Muscatine, Iowa, and Shanghai, China plants. Team members from the U.S., U.K.,
Greece and China were all involved in making this project happen.
Eleven Musco trucks were shipped from the U.S. to Athens for the event.
One of the most interesting venues, from a historical standpoint, was Panathinaikon Stadium, where Musco
designed lighting for the last kilometer of the Marathon the last event of the Games. Panathinaikon
Stadium is the site where the first modern-day Olympic Games were held 110 years ago.
Also, the first time beach volleyball competition was held at night under Musco Lights.
