Major League Baseball's return to the U.S. capital city included a major renovation to
40-year-old RFK Stadium, home of MLB's Washington Nationals.
Musco worked through Turner Construction, general contractor for the stadium renovation. After
evaluating the existing, non-Musco lighting equipment, project managers determined they
could not meet MLB's requirements by simply refurbishing and re-aiming the 20-year
old system.
The dramatic improvement in photometric efficiency of Green Generation Lighting® allowed
Musco to replace 194 existing fixtures with 144 new fixtures in the A locations the
infield light banks nearest home plate. Due to the Green Generation Lighting System's constant light-level
technology, Musco could guarantee MLB's 250 footcandle requirement. The old lights were used
in other locations around the ballpark.
Musco also cleaned, re-lamped, and re-aimed existing lighting equipment in the outfield to
meet MLB requirements.
Despite the significant change in the scope of the project, Musco was able to design, manufacture,
and complete the project in less than eight weeks to be ready for the Nationals' home opener
April 4.
