FIFA World Cup Training Fields

Musco Lighting recently installed lighting for 10 World Cup training base camps in South Africa. In just 57 days, Musco manufactured, shipped, and installed the lighting systems for the fields, including over 450 fixtures in total. Twelve ocean cargo containers were needed to transport the lighting equipment to South Africa.

For each project, Musco’s team of professionals works to meet unique needs by providing turn-key results including project management solutions, electrical design and installation, and onsite resources. For the World Cup training fields, the geographically varied locations required establishing several different jobsites and presented a range of soil conditions for installation. At the Northlands, beach sand required the foundations to be dug by hand. At Laudium, the team encountered solid rock. Access to each site was also challenging, since turf contracts were awarded ahead of lighting, and the team had to work around the newly built grass playing fields.

Several fields had old lights that needed to be taken down before the new lights could be installed. Two fields have temporary installations that will be removed after the World Cup. Four fields require three of the poles to be moved after the World Cup. Musco was able to install suitable temporary lighting and will move poles post-tournament without difficulty.

World class athletes will practice at these fields in preparation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which will take place June 11 – July 11 of this year.

Musco's energy-efficient Green Generation Lighting® systems are the result of 30 years of technology innovation. Green Generation lighting offers up to 50% savings in operating costs through reduced energy consumption and an automated on/off Control-Link® system.
