Participants in a unique nation-wide safety program were recently rewarded for their continuing success in
reducing injuries throughout Little League Baseball.
As a proud sponsor and supporter of Little League Baseball, Musco Lighting facilitates
A Safety Awareness Program (ASAP),
striving to increase safety in Little League. Started as a grassroots effort to involve all
safety officers, Musco facilitates writing a monthly newsletter that serves to disperse the ideas
and innovations each safety officer develops, helping all learn from individual experiences.
As part of ASAP, leagues develop their own safety programs, tailored to their own needs, based
on 12 minimum standards. These plans are part of an awards program, with the best two plans from
each region being acknowledged, and the single best safety plan in the country winning a Musco
lighting system for a 200-foot Little League field. This year, Granada Hills, Calif.,
Little League won the Musco lights.
In all, over 38 percent of all leagues in the U.S. implemented a safety plan through ASAP in 2001.
The number of injuries has dropped 58 percent since the program was started in 1995, with the number
of injuries per district dropping from an average of 11.5 to 4.8 currently.
As a result of ASAP participation, seven states will have their Little League insurance rates reduced
next year thanks to a corresponding drop in accidents. In addition, all leagues using the Little League/CNA
Insurance will have expanded dental benefits and long-term surgical benefits due to savings the program has
afforded Little League as a whole.
Muscos involvement in ASAP is just an outgrowth of our interest in improving the recreational
opportunities and safety of sports enthusiasts everywhere, said Musco President Joe Crookham.
