Gold Medal Community
Goes Green

Scottsdale, Arizona knows sports. The city is a three-time recipient of the National Gold Medal, the most prestigious award in the Parks and Recreation profession. Sports Illustrated magazine and the National Recreation and Park Association also recognized Scottsdale as Arizona's Sports Town in 2004. In addition, Scottsdale is a Nationally Accredited Park and Recreation Agency as conferred by the National Commission for Accreditation of Parks and Recreation Agencies – the only city in Arizona to have achieved such an honor.

To maintain high levels of excellence in recreation, the city of Scottsdale is continually improving the quality of their sports facilities. Changing the existing field lights at a number of city facilities was at the top of the list. City officials identified energy costs, spill and glare control and performance as the main considerations when choosing a lighting system. They determined Musco's Green Generation™ technology met their needs in each area.

In addition, they thought the system would best comply with the city's “green” standards. “We used Musco Green Generation lights for our fields because they are environmentally friendly,” said Judy Weiss, Scottsdale's Parks and Recreation director.

Green Generation™ Lighting
49 poles · 385 luminaires

Control-Link® Control and
Monitoring Systems
Life cycle savings over $750,000
Light·Structure Green™ was first installed in Scottsdale at Supai Middle School. Since that time, Green Generation Lighting systems have been installed at three additional facilities – Indian School Park, CAP Basin Sports Complex and Scottsdale Stadium.

Green Generation Lighting reduces energy consumption by half through increased luminaire efficiency and Control-Link®, an automated scheduling and monitoring system. Musco also includes a 25-year warranty for group lamp replacements and routine maintenance of all the lights, which saves significant annual budget dollars, time and hassle.

Based on estimated combined hours of usage of the four facilities, the estimated life-cycle energy savings is projected to be just over $518,000. The facilities can also expect to save an additional $263,000 in maintenance costs. That means the city of Scottsdale will realize a savings of over three-quarters of a million dollars over 25 years.

Neighborhood spill light solutions
The city of Scottsdale was especially interested in spill and glare control since many of their fields are near residential areas. “Some people live only 25 feet away from a playing field, and we need to be mindful of the amount of light cast into their homes,” said Weiss. “We are always interested in the latest products that help reduce the amount of spill and glare, and Musco's Green Generation caught our eye.”

Supai Middle School hosts the oldest Little League Baseball® league in Scottsdale, and the lights were in dire need of upgrading. “The previous lights were circa 1980 — wooden telephone poles and weak lamps,” said Weiss. Musco needed to particularly monitor the amount of spill light in this residential area. “We had to accommodate neighbors' concerns over spill and glare; but everybody is happy now. The new lights are a dramatic improvement over what we had before,” said Weiss.

Spill and glare control was also a concern at Indian School Park, home to Major League Baseball's San Francisco Giants' spring training facilities. Only one field of the 4-field complex was lighted, so Musco was chosen to install lighting systems at the other three fields. Green Generation systems minimize the amount of light on the surrounding areas.

Special requirements
Increasing light levels for television broadcast was the key issue at Scottsdale Stadium. This complex is home to some of Scottsdale's most celebrated occasions and the home of the Giants' spring training games. With seating for over 11,000 people, the stadium's
existing system did not produce enough light for television. Musco's Green Generation technology increased the light levels, and the field was ready by the time ESPN arrived to broadcast the World Baseball Championship games in March 2006.

CAP Basin is a developing 71-acre youth sports facility where Musco has installed Green Generation lights on four of the 10 sand-based sports fields. “This park is located in northern Scottsdale, and neighbors have high expectations,” said Weiss. “The lighting is amazing, and Musco built custom black poles to support state-of-the-art equipment. The neighbors will be happy.”

Green Generation lights have also been purchased for two softball fields in Chaparral Park, which is expected to open in 2007.

Green the new standard
Weiss thinks lighting is one of Scottsdale's most important topics. “If I could do anything for the city it would be to light up everything,” she said. “We've got to have lighted fields to safely recreate, because the heat is just not safe for children or adults during the day. Lighting will always be a sensitive issue. What we put up is very important.”

This gold medal city isn't resting on its laurels. Scottsdale has just adopted the LEED™ Gold policy for all new building plans. LEED, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a certification program developed by the U.S. Green Building Council to define standards for energy efficient facilities or intelligent building design.

Scottsdale intends to use Musco Green Generation Lighting for future porjects to maintain its position as one of the nation's leaders in developing recreation facilities that conserve environmental and taxpayer resources.
