When Hurricane Katrina swept ashore on August 29th, 2005, it changed the life of every resident along the gulf coasts of Louisiana and Mississippi. Like many property owners along the coast, the Catholic Diocese of Biloxi, Mississippi, was devastated by the storm. Out of the 18 schools in the diocese, 10 were either completely destroyed or heavily damaged. The diocese assessed the economic feasibility of rebuilding or repairing all of the damaged schools and decided to combine two of its damaged schools, St. John’s and Mercy Cross, into one new high school, which they named St. Patrick.
Proven durability was a decisive factor in the selection of Light-Structure Green for
St. Patrick High School’s new football stadium.
In building the school’s new football and baseball facilities, the diocese understandably was concerned with maximizing durability. They invested in an artificial turf
football field and were determined to find
a lighting system that would match the quality of the field while staying within a restrictive budget.

Warranty, Durability, and Cost Favor Musco
“Cost and warranty were our biggest issues, and Musco’s Light-Structure Green™ beat the competition in both areas,” said Bobby Trosclair, principal at St. Patrick. “In cost, efficiency, usability, and durability, we feel we got a better product at a better price
with Musco.”
The Constant 25™ product assurance and warranty program included with Light-Structure Green provides all spot maintenance and group relamps for the next 25 years. The Control-Link® control and monitoring system automatically detects lamp outages or other problems with the lights so a repair technician can be proactively dispatched. In addition, the warranty guarantees the energy consumption and constant light levels of the system.
Light-Structure Green also has a proven track record of durability in high winds. After Hurricane Wilma ripped through southern Florida in October of 2005, the Green Generation Lighting® systems in the path of that storm were not damaged, while other lighting equipment suffered severe damage. Trosclair said he had already seen first-hand evidence of that durability: “We haven’t suffered through any hurricanes since Katrina, but we’ve had some tropical force winds and the lighting system has not had any problems at all.”
Installation Is Fast, Trouble-Free
Bobby Underwood, facilities director and varsity football coach at St. Patrick, was impressed by the installation process. “The installation was pretty amazing,” said Underwood. “I’ve seen lights installed at a university, and they had to use a light meter to aim every fixture after the pole was up. With Musco’s system, I watched them put a pole up in thirty minutes after the foundation had set. When the lights went on, they were already aimed. The concrete cylinders they poured for the foundation
and the concrete base and steel pole are
all very solid.”
Underwood was describing Musco’s 5 Easy Pieces™ construction. Light-Structure Green is designed so that all components — from foundation-to-poletop — work together as a complete system, making installation fast and trouble-free. The luminaires are completely assembled and aimed at the factory, further reducing installation time.
John Screws, project manager for Moses Electric, the contractor for the installation, said he appreciated the service-oriented approach of Musco throughout the installation process. “I was quite pleased with Musco’s performance throughout the process. Shop drawings were very informative, technical assistance was readily available, and your product lived up to its promises. I would not hesitate to recommend Musco Sports Lighting in
the future.”

Lights Provide Long-Term Savings
Light-Structure Green has the highest efficiency of any sports lighting available. That efficiency is gained by focusing more light output from each fixture on the field, rather than losing it as wasted spill light or sky-glow. As a result, Musco can light a field with 40 percent fewer fixtures than typical floodlighting technology.
According to Underwood, the lights have made a believer out of the school’s varsity baseball coach. “Our baseball coach was concerned that the few fixtures used to light the baseball field could provide enough light. When the lights were turned on, he was floored. He couldn’t believe so few fixtures could light the field like that.”

With fewer fixtures required to produce the specified light output, Light-Structure Green saves up to 50 percent in operating costs compared to other floodlighting systems. Combining energy savings with the maintenance savings from the Constant 25 warranty, St. Patrick will save more than $73,000 in life-cycle costs over the 25-year warranty period.
