Director Cameron Crowe and Producer/Actor Tom Cruises latest film, Vanilla Sky, is based on the
surreal 1997 Spanish thriller Open Your Eyes. The English-language remake of the film insightfully
probes the boundaries between reality and illusion.
Vanilla Sky chronicles the life of David Aames (Cruise). Aames has it all fame, fortune, and true love.
Until he makes a small mistake that takes him on a roller coaster search for his soul.
Several scenes were filmed in downtown Los Angeles where skyscrapers lining the streets cast troublesome
shadows across the set, depending on the angle of the sun. Director of Photography, John Toll, ASC, called on
Musco to brighten the area with the Musco Light to eliminate
the shadows of the buildings.
Fortunately, Musco technicians were able to maneuver the truck in front of a parking garage without blocking
access. The light reached the required area without the crane blocking a view of the camera and with minimal
traffic interference.
The film also stars Penelope Cruz, Kurt Russell, and Cameron Diaz.
