Energy-efficient Sports Lighting Qualifies for Incentives, Rebates
Ask your utility company
Many utility companies and state departments of energy offer rebates and incentives to promote the use of energy-efficient products including athletic field lighting. Incentives vary and come in the form of rebates, grants, low-interest loans, and reduced kilowatt rates. Most programs offer or require energy audits. Once the audit is complete, utility companies help fund new installation or a retrofit of old lighting with energy-efficient systems.
Consider performance contracting
Another option, called performance contracting, allows a facility to complete energy-saving improvements within an existing budget. Typically this is a contract between the facility and an Energy Services Company. The ESCO pays the upfront cost of the energy-efficient improvement, and the facility repays the ESCO with the cost savings resulting from the project. Performance contracting is an attractive option because improvements can be implemented using energy and operating savings rather than using capital budget dollars or passing a referendum. Ask your city manager or purchasing department about the possibility of performance contracting.
Contact your lighting manufacturer
Finding out about funding and financing options in your area is easy. Contact your local utility company or state department of energy to get started. Musco Lighting has in-house resources to help communities find energy incentives and grants in their area to help pay for energy-efficient sports-lighting projects.
