The Challenge

Founded to create positive opportunities for youth on Chicago’s West Side, Intentional Sports™ features a world-class campus with 150,000 ft² (13,935 m²) of indoor and outdoor facilities to provide the local community with no-cost and low-cost athletic opportunities. Intentional Sports™ founder Andy McDermott had a vision to equip the campus with a welcoming outdoor space for small-sided football that would draw in passersby with lights and the sound of laughter on the courts. These pitches would allow Intentional Sports™ and its partners to host everything from pick-up games and grassroots classes to tournaments, adult leagues, and even corporate events.

The Solution

The U.S. Soccer Foundation informed McDermott about Musco’s Mini-Pitch System™, an all-in-one modular sports solution complete with fencing, goals, benches, LED floodlights, and ADA-compliant access for streamlined installation. McDermott became convinced that the system aligned with the mission of Intentional Sports™, and by sharing photos and stories of other successful mini-pitch projects, raised support from funding partners to bring two pitches to the Intentional Sports™ campus. Galvanised steel construction and an optional turf surface provide durability and functionality in Chicago’s varied climate, and remote-operable TLC for LED™ floodlights extend outdoor play time by three hours per night on average without disturbing neighbours with glare or spill light. Musco’s long-term warranty covers every part and all labour on the system for 10 years.
