Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) is one of the fastest growing airports in the country and a Central Texas economic engine, supplying over 74,000 direct and indirect jobs in the region. When the airport’s existing floodlighting equipment was unable to produce the proper light levels on the apron and began having issues with its controls, project leaders began searching for a new solution to improve worker safety. They partnered with ADB Safegate for help finding an LED airport lighting system that would improve light levels and glare control while lowering operating costs, as well as be environmentally friendly, require minimal maintenance, and offer a 10-year warranty. In the best-case scenario, the lighting manufacturer would also be able to help with the system’s design and installation.
After determining that Musco Lighting could meet all Austin-Bergstrom’s needs, project leaders opted to retrofit the airport with Musco’s TLC for LED™ technology. Musco created photometric designs and provided project management for the installation of the system, which achieves the light levels needed for safety while minimising spill light and glare with its patented visoring technology. The new system decreases energy consumption by 67 per cent compared to the previous equipment, and with every part and all labour covered for 10 years by Musco’s warranty, Austin-Bergstrom is expected to save over $400,000 in operating costs by the year 2032.
“Improving worker safety, protecting the environment, and having a cost-saving project is a great achievement for AUS. We’re grateful to have partnered with Musco Lighting on this project.”
