Bud and Georgia Johnson Accessible Miniature Golf Course

The Challenge

Camp Courageous in Monticello, Iowa, is a 400-acre, year-round recreational and respite care facility for individuals with special needs and their families. Campers enjoy hiking, canoeing, nature activities, sports, crafts, and a variety of other activities. In early 2023, the camp began construction on an 18-hole mini golf course, with care taken to minimize physical barriers and to provide an environment that would be safe and enjoyable into the nighttime hours. Working with Harris Miniature Golf Course Team—a premier designer and builder of custom-designed miniature golf courses—the camp and its title sponsors, Bud and Georgia Johnson, wanted to ensure a top-notch course that will last in campers’ memories.

The Solution

Camp Courageous formed a relationship with Musco in 2022 when the camp added a custom-designed, fully accessible Musco Mini-Pitch System™ modular sports solution to its Macek-Papke Multipurpose Field. Impressed by the system performance and quality of service, the camp approached Musco about designing a lighting system for its new mini-golf course. Musco installed a TLC for LED® system—the same technology used at national monuments, championship golf courses, and professional sports stadiums—to provide clear, uniform visibility on the course and surrounding walkways. For heightened atmosphere, each of the course’s six light poles is decorated with color-changing pole accent lighting. Golfers of all ages and abilities have been delighted by the additions, and in 2023, Camp Courageous proudly presented Musco with its 2023 Trailblazer Award in recognition of extraordinary contributions that help the camp to further its mission to serve people with disabilities.
