What once started as a practice facility with an infield and no outfield fencing transformed into a high caliber baseball stadium after Colorado Mesa University (CMU) completed a long-awaited overhaul of its on-campus baseball facility, which is part of the Bus Bergman Sports Complex. Through a partnership with the city of Grand Junction, the Mavericks previously played games at Suplizio Field—which is off-campus and shared by multiple local teams. The partnership was successful but in 2019 the NCAA created a post-season tournament that was the catalyst for change. For the new competition field, CMU wanted to create an exciting environment capable of hosting playoff games and needed advanced LED lighting that would satisfy broadcasting requirements and include cutting-edge special effects technology.
CMU has several facilities lit by Musco and was well aware of the company’s reputation as an industry leader—which led the university to install its Total Light Control – TLC for LED™ technology. The system meets NCAA broadcast requirements by directing uniform light down onto the field for enhanced light levels, while the BallTracker® technology targets control light upward for optimized visibility of the aerial ball at night. CMU opted for Musco’s Show-Light+® entertainment services to create additional excitement during game nights with light shows and special effects that also include light-to-music synchronization. Additionally, the university won’t pay any maintenance costs until the year 2047 thanks to its comprehensive warranty.
