The Challenge

As pickleball catches on with athletes of all ages, Tupelo Parks and Recreation envisioned a state-of-the-art court complex that would serve as a hub for pickup games, local leagues, and even traveling tournaments. With support from the Tupelo Convention & Visitors Bureau, the city identified an ideal location for the new court complex and went looking for a lighting provider who could deliver high-quality, uniform illumination while protecting neighbors and the night sky from spill light and harmful glare.

The Solution

The City of Tupelo worked with Musco to design a Total Light Control—TLC for LED™ lighting system for the first-ever Phase II DarkSky certified athletic facility in the state of Mississippi. Precisely aimed luminaires provide park patrons with clear and even lighting throughout the 12-court complex. DarkSky International, a third-party independent organization, completed an on-site evaluation and determined the facility complies with DarkSky Outdoor Sports Lighting Program guidelines for protecting neighbors and the night sky. Like the Musco lighting at many of the area’s other athletic facilities—including Tupelo High School, Eastwood Softball Complex, and Theron Nichols, Rob Leake, Ballard, and Veterans parks—the TLC for LED® system at Dot Cooper Kelly Park is covered by a long-term warranty that eliminates all maintenance costs and concerns well into the future.
