Gill Stadium’s historical roots trace back to the “building boom” of traditional concrete-and-steel ballparks from the early 1900s—which provided the oldest and most iconic Major League Baseball stadiums of today. For the first time since 2004, the historic stadium received extensive renovations that include minor reconfigurations of the facility’s design and the installation of an artificial turf field. Project leaders also wanted to upgrade the venue’s existing HID lighting system with an LED solution that includes modern control features to simplify operation of the lights. New lighting would need to achieve optimal light levels for local high school football and soccer competitions without affecting playability when used for baseball and softball games.
Having been satisfied with the performance of its previous lighting system—a metal halide system from Musco Lighting—Gill Stadium officials were confident that the company’s new TLC for LED® technology would be exactly what the project needed. For easy installation, Musco pre-aimed the new fixtures before shipping them to the project site, where they were retrofitted onto the stadium’s existing light poles. The new system meets lighting requirements for high school football and soccer fields and exceeds specifications for baseball and softball with 50 horizontal footcandles across the entire playing surface. Musco’s Control-Link® service enables simple operation via smartphone and also includes proactive scheduling features, while its parts and labor warranty eliminates all maintenance costs through the year 2044.
