Charles Robertson Park Mini-Pitch

The Challenge

To bring new opportunities to the underresourced and ethnically diverse community of Del Paso Heights, the City of Sacramento had been working with the Mutual Assistance Network to transform Charles Robertson Park into the Del Paso Heights Sports Complex. Besides adding new baseball pitches, project leaders wanted to convert a vacant lot into a series of futsal courts, which could host more small-sided pick-up football games than a single large pitch and would ideally be lit for safer nighttime play. These courts would also be rented out for local leagues and regional tournaments to fund park maintenance and community programming, create jobs for youth, and draw economic activity to local businesses.

The Solution

Project leaders teamed up with Sacramento Republic Football Club, Sierra Health Foundation, U.S. Soccer Foundation, and the Black Women’s Player Collective (BWPC), which had used Musco’s Mini-Pitch System™ modular sports solution to expand access to football for Black youth in Georgia and Kentucky. Musco provided project management and installation of a four-court mini-pitch complex complete with benches, goals, fencing, and ADA-compliant access. Inspiring quotes and imagery of BWPC board members—who are active players in the National Women’s Soccer League—are featured on custom signage around the courts. The remotely controlled TLC for LED™ floodlights extend play time by an average of nearly three hours per day without affecting neighbours with spill light or glare, and Musco’s parts and labour warranty eliminates all maintenance costs through the year 2031.
