The Challenge

Built in 1980, Zayed Sports City holds an iconic place in the culture of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The multi-purpose sports complex is home to the UAE’s national soccer (football) team, hosts world championship tennis matches, and accommodates a wide variety of other indoor and outdoor sports for participants ranging from amateurs to elites. When it came time to update the decades-old metal halide floodlighting around more than a dozen playing surfaces—including at the 5000-seat International Tennis Centre—the facility sought a state-of-the-art LED system that was adaptable enough to serve a variety of sports at every level of competition.

The Solution

Zayed Sports City opted for a retrofit system upgrade utilising Musco’s Total Light Control – TLC for LED™ technology. At the championship tennis court—which in 2022 hosted the prestigious Mubadala World Tennis Championship—the lighting system increased light levels and improved uniformity, enabling players, spectators, and cameras to track balls moving faster than 100 mph (160 km/h). Lighting systems for adjacent fields, courts, tracks, and pitches are tailored to meet the needs for a variety of sports, and Musco’s patented visor technology keeps glare from spilling to neighbouring roads and highways.
