With seating for more than 60,000 spectators, King Abdullah Sports City Main Stadium is one of the largest stadiums in Saudi Arabia. When viewed from above, the field looks like a gleaming emerald gemstone, earning it the nickname “The Jewel” (in Arabic, “Al Jawhara”). In 2023, the Saudi Ministry of Sport and Saudi Football Federation upgraded the facility with a state-of-the-art lighting upgrade that gave it some extra luster – and prepared it to host the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup. The new lighting system needed to meet the latest FIFA lighting standards and elevate the spectator experience while accommodating the venue’s unique architectural design.
After evaluating several lighting suppliers, the ministry called Musco, a company known for custom-designed LED lighting solutions at some of the world’s most prestigious venues – including Jeddah Corniche Circuit racetrack and Old Trafford stadium, home ground to Manchester United Football Club. Musco served as general contractor, working closely with the stadium’s original architects and structural engineers to custom manufacture a turnkey system solution that met all the venue’s lighting requirements while honoring its unique design. Musco’s project management experience, custom mounting solutions, and factory pre-aimed luminaires allowed for installation in just nine days. The TLC for LED™ luminaires provide high-quality, uniform lighting for superior visibility and broadcast quality, while colour-changing luminaires and advanced light show technology enhance the fan experience.
