The all-weather playing field at the Jamaica Hockey Federation’s headquarters in Mona, Kingston, Jamaica hosts men’s and women’s hockey games nearly every day of the year. While the pitch is designed for international competition, its floodlighting system was racking up large monthly energy bills, without meeting league requirements for night games at the highest levels of play. Jamaica Hockey Federation needed a budget-friendly floodlighting solution that would elevate the player and spectator experience in preparation for international tournaments.
After years of research, the Jamaica Hockey Federation chose to partner with Musco for the company’s system performance, service, and reputation. Working with a local contractor called Power Lighting and Telecom, the Musco team installed Total Light Control—TLC for LED™ technology on the pitch’s existing poles, along with new electrical and structural components designed to maximise system performance. The new system significantly improves visibility for players and spectators, consumes 61 per cent less energy than the previous lighting, and meets international league standards. In June 2023, the venue hosted the Pan American Hockey Foundation’s World Cup Qualifiers for Hockey5s, a pitch hockey variant that features a shorter format, quicker pace, and fewer players. The new lighting system also includes Musco’s long-term warranty, which covers parts and labor on the system until 2033.
“The players are impressed with the brightness of the new lights. They have said that now they can even see an ant walking on the turf.”
