The Challenge

One of the U.K.’s newest horseracing tracks, Chelmsford City Racecourse is known for its sleek design with distinctive champagne-flute floodlights. When it came time to update the existing Musco metal halide lighting system on the facility’s all-weather track—and add lights for the grass track—project leaders needed an LED sports lighting solution that would preserve the unique mast design. Besides saving energy, facility leaders wanted to raise light levels for television broadcasts and enhance the spectator experience with light shows synced to music. To prevent light from spilling onto nearby roads and residential properties, precise light control was also key.

The Solution

Chelmsford turned to Musco Lighting for its Total Light Control – TLC for LED® technology. Musco provided turnkey installation on both the all-weather track and the grass track, using custom mounting solutions to preserve the facility’s iconic mast design. The system reduces energy use by over 30 percent while raising light levels for broadcasts, and patented visoring prevents spill light and glare from disturbing neighbors. Spectacular light shows can be set to music through the Show-Light® Connect special effects interface, and every part and all labor on the system is covered for 10 years by Musco’s long-term warranty.
