In 2024-25, the New Saints F.C. became the first-ever Welsh club to qualify for the league phase of European competition – an opportunity that would raise the profile of the club and attract thousands of new and existing fans. Unable to use their home stadium, the team turned to nearby Croud Meadow in Shrewsbury, England – home of Shrewsbury Town F.C. – as a potential host site for three league phase matches for the UEFA Conference League.
Shrewsbury Town’s home turf met most requirements for UEFA competition but fell short of UEFA lighting standards. The facility team at Croud Meadow had to find a temporary lighting solution that would bring the stadium up to UEFA-approved light levels during match play.
After consulting with UEFA, The New Saints, and other industry experts, the facility team at Shrewsbury Town turned to Musco Lighting for a custom Temporary Light-Structure™ system that paired seamlessly with the stadium’s existing lighting.
Leveraging the stadium’s architectural design, Musco installed 30-meter-high galvanized steel poles on temporary bases in four open corners of the venue. A total of 64 factory-aimed TLC for LED® luminaires more than doubled the on-pitch light levels, provided uniform illumination across the field of play, enhanced the player and fan experience, and caused colors to “pop” during broadcasts.
The New Saints’ UEFA matches at Croud Meadow were a resounding success, expanding the club’s fan base and raising the profile of the sport. For Shrewsbury Town, the matches brought thousands of new fans to Croud Meadow and the surrounding community.
“The extra temporary lighting from Musco certainly enhances the experience for broadcasters as well as fans inside the stadium. It adds a different dimension. Without the assistance from Musco, we wouldn’t have been able to achieve our goal of hosting UEFA Conference League matches.”
