Baseball field at Wichita Riverfront Stadium after sports lighting upgrade

City of Wichita Brings MLB-affiliated Baseball Back to Kansas with
Color-Changing LED Sports Lighting at Riverfront Stadium

The Challenge

After years without an affiliate MLB club, the City of Wichita was eager to bring Minor League Baseball (MiLB) back to Kansas. To do this, the city needed to build a new stadium to AAA standards in time for the start of the 2020 MiLB season just 18 months away. Riverfront Stadium would need lighting that not only meets MiLB AAA standards but also allows the stadium to host events like football games and concerts. The system would need to offer advanced glare control, remote drivers for easy servicing, and color-changing capabilities, as well as a long-term warranty that ensures MiLB standards are met for years to come.

The Solution

Project leaders were familiar with the quality and reliability of Musco Lighting, the Official Lighting Provider of Minor League Baseball. After learning the company could meet their timeline and design requests, they welcomed the Wind Surge ball club to Wichita with a custom TLC for LED® system that made Riverfront Stadium one of the first MiLB venues with color changing RGBW technology. The system lights the field to AAA light levels while patented visoring preserves darkness around the stadium, and BallTracker® fixtures light the underside the aerial baseball for greater contrast against the dark sky. Control-Link® provides proactive system monitoring and call center support 24/7/365, and every part and all labor is covered by Musco’s 25-year warranty.

“The quality of the Musco product is unsurpassed in the industry. The system is everything we had hoped and expected it would be. It certainly meets or exceeds the new facility standards, and the colored lighting has been a great feature for us. Musco’s people are always available and eager to please; I don’t recall them ever saying no. In my view, going with Musco was an easy choice for all of us.”

“Musco has such a big partnership with Major League Baseball because of their reliability, and when you’re making an investment this big, you have to go with the name you know is going to work. The fact that Musco can guarantee that the light levels will be up to the specifications and make all the adjustments without us having to worry about it because that’s within the warranty is well worth the investment, because that’s something that Major League Baseball grades us on.”
